The Bagmati river is the largest river flowing through the Kathmandu valley and separates Kathmandu City from the district of Lalitpur. The Bagmati originates from the Shivapuri hills (2650m), 25km north of Kathmandu. According to the ancient tale, the river is believed to have originated from the laughter of Lord Shiva. it has a vital cultural and religious role and is used for ritual bathing and cremation, thus purifying the people spiritually.
Today the Bagmati river is in great peril. As a result of industrialisation, urbanisation and poor planning, the river faces serious environmental and ecological challenges. Large amount of water are withdrawn upstream and the quality of the remaining water is very poor. Untreated sewage, household waste and hazardous chemicals are dumped into the mining, as well as construction of houses, factories and slum settlements.
